Highlights
  • Classic fieldstone homes with a charming downtown
  • An educational mecca with a thriving arts scene
  • Home to one of America's top medical centers

In 1704, Quaker Rowland Ellis named his estate “Bryn Mawr” – Welsh for “high hill.” The town's grand stone homes were among the first Main Line estates.

Just nine miles west of Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr's 1,300 households straddle two counties and three townships: Lower Merion, Radnor and Haverford. To make matters more interesting, it's 19010 zip code includes Rosemont and Radnor Townships. Students are served by two top-rated school districts. Kids in Bryn Mawr's east side attend Lower Merion schools. Those in the west end go to Radnor Township's schools. Bryn Mawr's renowned private schools include Shipley, Baldwin and the Barrack Hebrew Academy.

There's plenty to do in this cultural center. Bryn Mawr and Rosemont College students enliven the local scene, and their beautiful campuses welcome the community for concerts, readings and noted speakers. The Bryn Mawr Film Institute screens independent and foreign films, as well as works by local filmmakers, while the highly regarded Main Line Arts Center presents both accomplished and emerging artists.
