Frank Furness was a famous architect in Philadelphia during the Victorian Era, who was well known for his design of the library at the University of Pennsylvania. Throughout the course of his life he designed over 600 buildings, although many of his works were demolished by the 20th century when his bold architectural style fell briefly out of fashion.
By the mid-20th century, his style has become rediscovered and embraced once again and some of the homes he built still exist to this day.
Sydbury Glen Estate
One of the surviving estates designed by Frank Furness that is currently on the market is the Sydbury Glen estate. The Sydbury Glen community is a 20-acre subdivision that now hosts several custom-built homes. Each home in the Sydbury Glen estate has a historical look and appeal to it, yet they are still able is to accommodate modern lifestyles. Homes located in the Sydbury Glen community can cost upwards of 3-million dollars.
Frank Furness also built the Dolobran Estate in 1881 for Clement Griscom, a shipbuilder and the president of the American Steamship Company. Originally, the estate was used as a summer home for Griscom’s family. The stable and barn were part of the original Colebrook Mansion that was built in 1903 and featured soaring ceilings, deep window sills, and all-around amazing architecture. In the 20th century much of the Dolobran land was sold and the home now stands on approximately 2-acres of land.
Henry L. Reinhold
Henry L. Reinhold began his architecture career with partner, Clarence E. Schermerhorn, under the name of Schermerhorn & Reinhold in Philadelphia. Although this partnership dissolved in 1901, Reinhold continued designing architectural structures until approximately 1932.
Henry Reinhold was known for building a beautiful Main Line Classic stone home in 1905 for Charles Sheaffer, Vice President of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The home has graced the South Wayne community for over 100 years and still stands today.
