Broomall, Pennsylvania was a crossroads community named for John Martin Broomall, a 19th-century U.S. congressman who had settled in Chester County. Towards the end of his terms in Congress, a new post office was established in his district in honor of Broomall. Created in 1868, the post office was located in the general store at the northwest corner of West Chester Pike and Sproul Road. After the Civil War and his congressional service, Broomall continued to work as a well-respected trial lawyer. He also served as the president for the Delaware County Mutual Insurance Company, the Law Library Association of the Delaware County Bar, and the Delaware County Institute of Science.
